Suppose you decide to make a dish from the internet that needs almond flour, but you don’t have it in your stock. A similar thing happened to me a few months ago when I planned to make pancakes. Then I searched on the internet and was looking for some alternatives to almond flour for my dish.

What Is Almond Flour?

Almond flour is made from ground almonds and can be used in making bread, cakes, muffins, chocolate cake, brownies, and others. It contains healthy fat, protein, and low carbohydrates.

1. Sunflower Seed Flour

You can use sunflower seed flour as a substitute for almond flour. This is a gluten-free and nut-free alternative component for almond flour.

Notice that due to the reaction of baking soda or baking powder, your baked goods can turn a little green in color if you substitute sunflower seed flour with almond flour. To avoid this, add 1 tablespoon of-

  • Lemon juice or
  • Apple cider vinegar

It won’t affect your baked dish’s quality. The texture and taste will be the same. Additionally, sunflower seed flour contains-

2. Cashew Flour

Another substitute for almond flour is cashew flour. It will add an awesome flavor to your dish. The ratio is- 1:1.

In this substitute list, next, we have coconut flour. We can also substitute almond flour with coconut flour. But coconut flour absorbs moisture quickly. In this case, your cake mixture may dry. Add eggs, oil, or liquid butter to modify it to make a perfect mixture.

Oat flour can be another substitute for almond flour. It contains a nutty flavor and will make your baked dishes light and fluffy. You can buy oat flour from stores or make it at home using a blender. 

Oats are naturally gluten-free products. But the process of manufacturing may include gluten in them. Those who have an allergy to gluten should purchase gluten-free oats.

All-purpose flour or plain white flour remains typically available at our home. So, it becomes very easy for us to substitute white flour instead of almond flour. Isn’t it?

7. Whole-Wheat Flour

We can also use whole-wheat flour as a substitute for almond flour. Since it is denser than plain white flour, it will not work as an alternative for almond flour alone. Mix whole -wheat flour and regular flour in equal quantities and use it as an alternative for almond flour.

We can also use other nut flour to replace almond flour. Because they have the same nutty flavor and texture. So, it won’t affect the dish’s taste too much.

Can I Use Almond Flour Instead of All-Purpose Flour 

Yes, you can use almond flour instead of all-purpose flour in a 1: 1 ratio. But there may be a difference in taste because almond flour is comparatively light and has a nutty flavor. Moreover, it becomes dry quickly and needs eggs and other liquid components to mix with it.

But all-purpose flour does not contain a nutty flavor and is heavier than almond flour. You can replace all-purpose flour if you want a gluten-free substitute for your dish. 

Can You Substitute Almond Flour for Regular Flour? 

Yes, you can substitute almond flour for regular flour, and the ratio should be 1: 1. But regular flour is comparatively heavier than almond flour, and it needs fewer eggs to bind and prepare a cake mixture. 

Is Almond Flour Gluten-free?

Gluten is a kind of protein that makes your baked dishes soft and fluffy. People with celiac disease, high blood pressure, wheat intolerance, or skin allergy can not eat gluten-based food. Luckily, almond flour is both gluten and wheat free.

Like almond flour, almond milk is also gluten-free. People who have gluten problems can consume almond-based products like almond flour and almond milk.

Almond Flour vs All-Purpose Flour

Presence of Gluten: All-purpose flour contains gluten, while almond flour is entirely gluten-free. But almond flour can be a good substitute for all-purpose flour. 

Fat content: All-purpose flour is a low-fat content and can’t add much moisture and fluffiness to baked items. On the contrary, almond flour is a high-fat content and provides a deep, heavy, and greasy feeling to baked goods.

Flavor: All-purpose flour has a mild flavor, but almond flour has a strong, nutty flavor. 

Shelf life: Normally, all-purpose flour can last for 6-8 months on the shelf and 1 year in the fridge. But almond flour has a short shelf life. It lasts for 2-3 months on the shelf and up to 6 months in the fridge.  

What Is Ground Almonds

Ground almonds are made from the skin of the whole almonds intact. It is called an almond meal too. It has a granular texture and has been used in bakery and confectionery since the 13th century.
